Fire Island: Sundays at Flynn’s!

Since it’s already almost July and we still have not been to Fire Island, my girlfriends and I decided that a Sunday afternoon partying at Flynn’s in Ocean Bay Park was a must. We hopped on the ferry, sitting on top (mistake! wind, lipgloss, hair down, ahhhhh), and headed out for our destination for some drinks and dancing on the water.

When we got there we realized that happy hour didn’t really start until 3pm, so we went for a walk to the beach. The town has a really laid back feel, with wooden summer houses along the streets and people walking around with Corona’s in their hand. It only took us about 10 minutes to walk to the beach, and it was beautiful. Clean, white sand adorned with colorful beach umbrellas and half-naked people playing frisbee. Now it really felt like summer.

My friends and I attempted to walk around the beach, being that our plan for the day had not originally included the need for beach towels or umbrellas, but soon realized that we were sweating through our clothes. Back to the bar.

It was now around 2PM so we decided to get lunch. The menu was a bit expensive, a house salad being $10.95 and a plain burger $13.95, so I decided to stick with sharing appetizers. We got Spinach and Artichoke Dip as well as Fried Calamari. The Spinach Dip was delicious, a lot less creamy than most places make it, and the calamari was lightly fried, making it taste like something other than bread crumbs. We also got drinks, my companions choosing frozen strawberry daiquiris and I sticking with my usual choice, wine. I stuck with their Unusual Whites section, choosing two of the cheaper wines which were $7 a glass. My favorite was their house Riesling, which was sweeter than my usual Chardonnay choice.

A little after 3PM the DJ started to play and Bud and Bud Lights became $3. Leaving the dining room, we walked to the outdoor bar to get some beers and take a lap of the place. It is a really nice vibe with the music in the background as you sip a beer literally right on the water. Our first lap around proved that there were a lot of wasted, Jersey Shore types. It didn’t seem to be too much better inside, so we decided to dance. The DJ played really great mixes of current songs and definitely had everyone dancing.

After about an hour or so a Reggae band replaced the DJ. It was a bit disappointing since everyone was loving the dance music so much, but it also gave everyone a chance to chill out with their beers and mingle. Plus, at 5PM Flynn’s opens up their drink specials to $3 wines and well drinks, which made me quite happy as I am not really a big beer fan. We replaced our drinks and took another lap of the place. Somehow, without us even noticing, the clientele of the place had shifting from guidos to include some other types as well, including some cute surfer boys and some sporty looking guys. We were very happy.

Miraculously, the DJ came back on and my friends and I, along with all of the other tipsy (and wasted) patrons of Flynn’s ran back on to the dance floor, meeting cute guys and even some people who knew from college. We took great photos (some of which are too “great” to post online) and had an amazing time. We just wish the ferry’s to Long Island ran all night (they only run to 11PM on Sundays) because we definitely would have stayed longer!
